5 Common Flower-Care Mistakes That Could Be Shortening the Life of Your Blooms

Fresh flowers don't need complicated care, but there are a few common mistakes that can shorten their vase life without you even realising it.

From where you place your flowers to how you care for their water, small changes can make a noticeable difference.

Here are five common flower-care mistakes I see — and what you can do instead.

1. Leaving leaves below the waterline

When preparing loose flowers for a vase, it's important to remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline.

Submerged leaves can break down in the water and contribute to a less clean environment for your flowers.

A simple rule to remember: keep the waterline clear of leaves.

2. Topping up old vase water

It can be tempting to simply add more water when the level in your vase gets low, but this doesn't remove the bacteria and debris that may already be in the water.

Instead, empty the vase and replace the old water with fresh water.

It takes a little more effort, but your flowers will thank you for it. 🌿

3. Keeping flowers in direct sunlight or heat

Flowers may look beautiful sitting by a sunny window, but direct sunlight and heat can cause them to lose water more quickly and shorten their vase life.

Instead, choose a cool, shaded spot away from direct sunlight and heat.

Your flowers don't need sunlight to stay fresh — cool and comfortable is better.

4. Keeping flowers too close to fruit

Fresh flowers and a fruit bowl may look perfectly lovely together, but it's better to keep them apart.

Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which can cause some flowers to age faster.

So if you want your blooms to last as long as possible, give them their own space — away from fruit.

5. Not recutting the stems

When you change your flower water, don't forget about the stems.

Giving them a fresh cut can help maintain their ability to take up water, especially as the cut end of the stem can become less effective over time.

A quick recut when you refresh the water is a simple habit that can help keep your flowers hydrated.

Fresh flowers don't need complicated care. Often, it's the small everyday habits that make the biggest difference.

Keep the water clean, give your flowers a comfortable environment, and avoid the common mistakes above. With a little care, you can enjoy your blooms for longer.

A little effort goes a long way when it comes to fresh flowers. 🌿
